By Sandro Volpicella, who builds FraudFalcon · updated · prices and ratings verified on the Shopify App Store that day

Shopify gives you four separate free things, and merchants mix them up. Fraud analysis scores an order. Fraud Control blocks a checkout. Flow cleans up afterwards. Shopify Protect pays you back. Only one of those stops anything.

Every claim below was checked against Shopify's own documentation on 2026-08-23. Start with the free route. Most stores should, and a good number should stay there.

Why merchants switch

Why merchants leave Shopify alone

The risk score is advice, not a decision

Shopify's fraud analysis scores an order once the payment is verified and shows you low, medium, or high. It cancels nothing and blocks nothing. Something still has to act on the recommendation, and by default that something is you.

Flow only runs after the order exists

Every Flow order trigger fires once the order has been created. Stock is committed and payment may already be captured. Flow is excellent at cleaning up. It cannot stand in front of a checkout.

The free checkout rules need Shopify Payments

Shopify documents that Fraud Control checkout rules are only available to merchants using Shopify Payments. On a third-party gateway the free blocking route is closed to you entirely, whatever your plan.

Three condition types is a narrow net

Fraud Control matches on emails, address attributes, and IP addresses. Cart value, item, discount code, and risk level are out of scope, and those are often where the pattern actually lives.

Flow only sees Shopify's own risk assessment

Shopify documents that its order risk trigger fires for Shopify risk assessments and not for third-party ones. If another tool scores your orders, Flow will not react to it.

Shopify Protect reimburses, it never prevents

The order is placed, paid, and shipped, and then the money comes back. Cover applies to the fraudulent and unrecognized dispute reasons, on Shop Pay orders, for merchants located in the US with a US Shopify Payments account.

Building it yourself needs a developer

A cart and checkout validation function is the only true server-side block you can write. It needs the Shopify CLI, a GraphQL input query, a build, and a deploy. Shopify also documents that custom apps containing Function APIs require Shopify Plus.

In detail

The alternatives, one by one

Fraud Control by Shopify

Best for: Stores on Shopify Payments that want a free block before the order exists.

Why choose it

  • Free, first-party, and it blocks the checkout rather than cleaning up afterwards.
  • No payment is captured and no inventory moves when a rule matches, so there is nothing to refund or restock.
  • Nothing extra on your bill and nothing to integrate.

When not to choose it

  • Shopify documents that checkout rules are only available to merchants using Shopify Payments. On another gateway they are unavailable.
  • Conditions cover emails, address attributes, and IP addresses only, so cart value, items, and risk level are out of reach.
  • Shopify writes that the app does not actively protect against fraud and guarantees no chargeback coverage.

Setup notes

  • Confirm you are on Shopify Payments before you plan around it.
  • Write each rule out as a plain sentence, then place a real test checkout that should be blocked.
  • It sits at 2.2 stars across 21 reviews as of 2026-08-23. Read them yourself before you rely on it.
Pricing
Free, with no paid tier. Live since May 2023. Read on the App Store 2026-08-23.
Example
A store on Shopify Payments blocking two repeat abusers by email pays nothing and needs nothing more.

Shopify Flow

Best for: Cleaning up high-risk orders automatically once they already exist.

Why choose it

  • Shopify documents Flow as a free app on the Basic, Grow, Advanced, and Plus plans.
  • The cancel order action voids the authorization and can refund, restock, notify the customer, and add a staff note.
  • Shopify ships a template for cancelling and restocking high-risk orders, so the first workflow takes minutes.
  • It can capture payment selectively, holding capture on high-risk orders while low and medium ones go through.

When not to choose it

  • Every order trigger fires after the order has been created, so Flow cannot stop a checkout.
  • Shopify documents that the order risk trigger fires only for Shopify risk assessments, not third-party ones.
  • The selective capture pattern needs manual capture switched on, which changes your cash flow and your customer emails.

Setup notes

  • Start from the cancel and restock high-risk orders template rather than a blank workflow.
  • Decide whether you are moving to manual capture before you build anything around payment capture.
Pricing
Free on all plans. HTTP request actions need Grow and above, and custom app tasks need Plus. Verified against Shopify's documentation 2026-08-23.
Example
A store seeing three high-risk orders a month cancels them with a Flow template and pays nothing. That is the right answer at that volume.

FraudFalcon

Best for: Stores whose fraud pattern is wider than three condition types, or who are not on Shopify Payments.

Why choose it

  • Checkout rules block before the order exists on any gateway, using email, shipping country, order total, item quantity, login state, or past order count.
  • Post-order rules read 35+ conditions, including address mismatch, disposable email domains, IP address, customer order count, and past chargebacks.
  • It acts on medium risk as well as high, because you set the threshold rather than inheriting one.
  • A match cancels with automatic refund and restock, holds fulfillment, tags, allowlists, or alerts you.

When not to choose it

  • It costs $29.99 a month at the entry tier and there is no free plan. Below roughly 100 orders a month the free route usually wins on cost.
  • It is another app to maintain, with its own rules that can block a real customer if you write one badly.
  • It gives you no chargeback cover. Shopify Protect and paid guarantee services do that, and this replaces neither.

Setup notes

  • List your last twenty bad orders first. If Fraud Control's three condition types would have caught them, use the free route and keep your money.
  • Run every new rule in tag-only mode for a week before you let it cancel anything.
  • Turn checkout rules on last, because they are the only ones a customer can feel.
Pricing
$29.99 for 500 orders a month, $49.99 for 1,000, $149.99 for 5,000, and $399.99 for 20,000. Fourteen-day trial, no free plan. Read 2026-08-23.
Example
A store at 1,000 orders a month pays $49.99. That is worth it once fraud costs more than $49.99 a month, and not a day before.

Shopify Protect

Best for: US merchants on Shop Pay who want free cover on stolen-card disputes.

Why choose it

  • Free, with no commission and nothing to install.
  • It covers the fraudulent and unrecognized chargeback reasons, and credits back the amount plus the fee.
  • Eligible orders are marked as protected in the admin, so you know before you ship.

When not to choose it

  • It prevents nothing. The order is placed, paid, and shipped, and you still lose the goods.
  • Eligibility is narrow. Shop Pay orders only, and the merchant must be located in the US with a US Shopify Payments account.
  • The exclusions are long, covering digital products, buy-online-pickup-in-store, subscription orders after the first, and any order whose shipping address changed after checkout.

Setup notes

  • Check which orders show as protected in the admin before you build a policy around it.
  • Meet the fulfillment gates. Valid tracking within seven days, in transit within ten, on a supported carrier.
Pricing
Free. Eligibility and exclusions verified against Shopify's own documentation on 2026-08-23.
Example
A US store on Shop Pay gets a $300 fraudulent chargeback credited back. The money returns and the product does not.

Switching

How to switch without breaking anything

Time investment: An hour to set up Fraud Control or a Flow template. Half a day to move real conditional logic into an app.

Before you start

  • Your last twenty fraudulent orders with the email, the address, the IP, the cart value, and the risk level Shopify gave each one. That tells you whether three condition types would have been enough.
  • Your payment gateway, because Shopify Payments decides whether the free checkout rules are open to you at all.
  • Your monthly order count, because it decides whether a paid plan can pay for itself.

Where this breaks

  • Fraud Control and another app can both block a checkout. Decide which one owns the decision before you turn on the second.
  • A Flow workflow that cancels high-risk orders will race a rules app doing the same thing. Turn one off first.
  • Moving from automatic to manual capture changes your cash flow and the emails your customers receive. Do not do it as a side effect.

Test these first

  • A checkout that should be blocked, placed from a real browser, so you see exactly what the buyer sees.
  • A high-risk order, to confirm your cancel path refunds and restocks.
  • An ordinary order from a repeat customer, to confirm nothing fires.
  • Your abandoned checkouts the same day, because blocked checkouts land there.

Safe rollout

  1. Day 0: turn on Shopify's free options first. Fraud Control if you are on Shopify Payments, plus a Flow template for high-risk orders.
  2. Day 0 to 14: log every fraudulent order that still gets through and note which condition would have caught it.
  3. Day 14: if the free route caught everything, stop here. It costs nothing and it works.
  4. Day 14 onward: if it did not, add a rules app, run it in tag-only mode for a week, then let it act one rule at a time.

FAQ

Shopify alone questions, answered

Can I block fraudulent orders on Shopify without an app?
Partly. Shopify's free Fraud Control app blocks checkouts on emails, address attributes, and IP addresses, and Shopify Flow can cancel, refund, and restock after the order exists. Both are free.
Does the built-in fraud analysis block orders automatically?
No. It produces a low, medium, or high recommendation once the payment is verified, and leaves the decision to you. Something else has to act on it.
What happened to the Shopify Fraud Filter app?
It is gone. Its App Store page now says the app is not currently available, and the old help documentation for it has been removed. Fraud Control is Shopify's current first-party option. Checked 2026-08-23.
Can Shopify Flow stop a checkout?
No. Every Flow order trigger fires after the order has been created. Flow is a cleanup tool rather than a gate, and the fraudulent order exists before it runs.
Do the Fraud Control checkout rules need Shopify Payments?
Yes. Shopify documents that checkout rules are only available for merchants using Shopify Payments. On a third-party gateway you cannot use them.
Does Shopify Protect prevent fraud?
No. It credits back the amount and the fee on covered chargebacks. The order is still placed, paid, and shipped, and the goods are still gone.
Which chargebacks does Shopify Protect cover?
The fraudulent and unrecognized reasons. It excludes digital products, buy-online-pickup-in-store, subscription orders after the first, and orders whose shipping address changed after checkout, among others.
Who is eligible for Shopify Protect?
Orders processed through Shop Pay, where the merchant is located in the United States and has a US Shopify Payments account. Checked against Shopify's documentation on 2026-08-23.
Can I write my own checkout block?
Yes, with a cart and checkout validation function. It needs the Shopify CLI, a GraphQL input query, a build, and a deploy, and Shopify documents that custom apps containing Function APIs require Shopify Plus.
Can I block medium-risk orders for free?
Flow can cancel a medium-risk order automatically once it exists. You cannot stop one at checkout for free unless the buyer also matches an email, address, or IP rule in Fraud Control.
Is the free route enough?
For plenty of stores, yes. If your fraud is a few high-risk orders a month and you are on Shopify Payments, Fraud Control plus a Flow template costs nothing and does the job.
When is a paid app worth it?
When the free route keeps missing. If your bad orders share a pattern that is not an email, an address, or an IP, or you are on a third-party gateway, you need conditions Shopify does not offer.
